Meet our July cover star, Rachelle Llanes! She opened up to us about how she finds makeup inspiration in Egyptian culture & her most requested look from clients!

How did you get your start in the makeup world?

I was actually a tomboy growing up but started to dabble with makeup in middle school. My family would always tell me I wear too much makeup, but I didn't care because I loved my Wet 'n' Wild brown lip liner so much. I started working for MAC during college and never thought it was something I wanted to pursue as my career until later. I was working towards a Psychology degree and working with makeup allowed me to express myself artistically and work with individuals on a personal level.

"It's important to wake up every morning knowing your job is your passion and you have fun doing it."

What was your job before you got into makeup?

I wore many hats before I started makeup. My first job was McDonald's when I was 15 1/2, I mean.. I had to start somewhere haha. Then I helped manage my Mom's business, worked as a Receptionist at a dental office and an awesome sneaker store called Shoe Biz on Haight Street.

What are your favorite types of makeup looks to create?

I'm definitely a beauty look kinda person. I love enhancing the natural beauty. But I absolutely love challenging myself to create editorial looks and use bright colors.

What is your favorite part of your makeup routine?

Complexion because I'm very self-conscious about my skin and I try very hard to take care of it with great skincare.

Where do you find your inspiration?

My inspiration usually comes from things I go through in my daily life. I've described some of my looks, death-like or sick looking because there are some days where I'm just not feeling it so why not look it? I've always been fascinated with Egyptian culture, history, art & architecture which I draw a lot of inspiration from.

"When I worked for one of the most inspiring and hard working women."

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

I've always lived by this quote.
"If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery--isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you'll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is."
